Research Scientist/Engineer

Interface Biologics (IBI) is an early commercial stage, privately held company based within the MaRS Discovery District in downtown Toronto. IBI develops innovative materials for Medtech and Pharmaceutical applications. The Company’s surface modification additives are used in FDA-approved medical devices and are clinically proven to reduce infection and thrombus-related complications. IBI’s sustained local drug delivery technology is applicable across a range of drug classes and medical specialties with an initial focus on ophthalmology. The company’s lead product under development in the local drug delivery technology is a dexamethasone-releasing intravitreal implant for the treatment of inflammatory ocular conditions and is anticipated to be in clinical trials in 2020. Position Summary:

The Research Scientist/Engineer I will support the development of IBI’s local, sustained drug delivery technology for targeted applications. The position will have a role in prototyping, characterization, and testing of novel molecular compounds in support of IBI’s drug delivery platform technology. The ability to problem solve, perform work in a well-organized and logical manner, and communicate effectively are attributes that will be critical to success in this position.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform a range of experiments in the laboratory to develop new biomaterial formulations for device prototypes and applications
  • Characterize, interpret and document resulting data and problem solve challenges based on scientifically sound theory
  • Conduct and evaluate organic chemical reactions for material synthesis and purification techniques with respect to product quality and reproducibility
  • Develop and execute experiments to characterize new molecular compounds based on physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties
  • Develop test methods and standard operating procedures for new processing techniques and characterization
  • Formulate candidate materials into drug delivery formulations and evaluate drug delivery properties
  • Work on multiple projects of varying complexity in parallel
  • Prepare reports, SOPs, and presentations as required, and maintain proper documentation
  • Communicate project results to team members, managers, and management as required

Required Education and Work Experience:

  • Masters or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science or Pharmaceutical Science
  • 1-3 years research and experimental design experience, either in academia or industry

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong practical experience in material processing (coating, particle formulation, extrusion etc
  • Strong practical experience with characterization techniques including NMR, HPLC, IR, DSC, XRD, microscopy (optical, SEM), particle size
  • Strong practical experience with material synthesis and purification techniques
  • Working knowledge of drug delivery concepts or pharmaceutical formulation chemistry
  • Working knowledge of quality systems and regulatory guidance’s (ICH/FDA/ISO)
  • Working knowledge and experience with cell culture techniques, in vivo models and material biocompatibility testing would be an asset
  • Strong problem solving ability and creativity while working in a well-organized and logical manner
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, and communication skills
  • Flexible, with an ability to multi-task and adhere to timelines
